The 4th September 476 the final act of the long and glorious history of the Western Roman Empire took place. The decisive battle took place at the capital Ravenna:  Romulus Augustus was deposed by Odoacer, who sent back the imperial insignia to Constantinople. What were and what symbolic value did the imperial insignia sent by Odoacer to Zeno, emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire? It was a scepter in "orichalcum", a "toga picta", a diadem, a "parazonium" and the purple "paludamentum".
